Shaw Overcomes Turnovers For Sixth Straight Win Sherri Fillingham 01/19/12 [Raleigh, NC] - Shaw turned the ball over 32 times but outrebounded Lincoln 63-31 on their way to a 67-51 win Thursday night. The win is the Lady Bears' sixth straight, improving their record to 10-5, a perfect 6-0 in the CIAA. The win was closer than a 32-rebound margin might suggest. "This is the third straight game where you'd look at the statistics and think we won by more," said Shaw Associate Head Coach Carl Hatchell. "It's just a matter of mental toughness. "The problem is not just the turnovers, but the number of unforced turnovers," he continued. "We shot 52 percent in the second half - that means each turnover was essentially one point. You can't give up points like that and survive." The Lady Lions took a lead in the second half, building a three-point margin with 11:17 left in the game. Shaw then found a rhythm and scored 18 straight to build a 62-45 lead when Aslea Williams hit a layup on the fast break. "We started getting stops," said Hatchell of the team's turnaround midway through the second. "We forced them into missed shots and got some fast breaks. We also stopped trying to make great passes and focused on making some good ones." Both teams struggled on offense in the first half with Shaw outshooting Lincoln 34.5 percent to 29.7 percent. But with the turnovers, the Lady Bears took only 29 shots to the Lady Lions 37. Shaw led by 29-25 at the half. The offensive woes fed on themselves, said Hatchell. "Sometimes we'd get in the flow, make a great pass, then miss the open shot. That leads to a letdown." In the second, Shaw built a six-point lead when Aslea Williams hit a jumper in the lane to give the Bears a 33-27 advantage. They would stretch the lead to seven, but then Lincoln began hitting some shots off of Shaw turnovers. In the next four minutes, Lincoln outscored Shaw 15-5, turning the seven-point deficit into a three-point lead with 11:17 left. That's when the Shaw offense took over, and the Lady Bears reeled off the 18 straight points. With 1:36 left Williams hit a layup to give the Bears a 67-48 lead. Sharay DuBose then hit a trey for Lincoln to close out the scoring and give Shaw the 67-51 final tally. Williams led all scorers with 14 points. Brittany Ransom added another 12 and Allyssa Lane ten. Kyria Buford led both teams with 19 rebounds. Victoria Tanner pulled in 11 boards of her own. Buford and Lane had three assists each to lead Shaw. For Lincoln, Denyse Moore was the only Lady Lion in double figures. Cynthia Johnson, DuBose and Krystal Fluellen had nine each. Moore and Johnson had seven rebounds apiece and Johnson dished out three assists to lead her squad. On Saturday, the Lady Bears host cross-town rival Saint Augustine's at 2:00 p.m. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for the contest. The game is at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus. Janelle Murphy drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 14 with just over ten minutes to play, but the Hawks managed just five points over the next 7:38, and Livingstone held a 25-19 advantage late in the half. Murphy finished with nine points and played 38 minutes. Chowan's offense then came alive, as the Hawks connected on their final three shots of the half, to end on an 8-2 spurt and send the score into halftime deadlocked at 27. After Livingstone opened the second half on a 9-0 run, Chowan hit eight of their next nine shot attempts, spurring a 21-8 run, and putting the Hawks up 48-44 with 12 minutes to play. Chowan widened that lead to five points, but the Lady Blue Bears responded with an 11-0 run to take a six point lead with 6:16 remaining on the clock. LC's lead stayed at six with 3:38 on the clock when the Hawks' started to go to the free throw line. A free throw and later layup by Jennings tied the game at 64 with 2:14 to play. Chowan would not relinquish the lead. Jennings went 3-4 at the line down the stretch, while Murphy made both of her attempts and Lynch added another. Livingstone battled tough until the end, though, scoring four points in the final 15 seconds. Chowan played only seven players in the game, and all five starters played at least 29 minutes. They got plenty of support, however, from the two off the bench. CIAA Rookie of the Week Summer Curtis blocked four shots and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in just 12 minutes of play, and Naima Harrington tallied 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Livingstone out-rebounded Chowan 53-38, and shot 36.0% from the floor. Chowan nailed 45.5% of their shots, including going 14-23 (60.9%) in the second half. LC made just one of ten three-point attempts. Chowan will begin CIAA North play on Saturday, January 21st, when they host Bowie State University at 2:00pm.
