Three Chowan Basketball Players Earn CIAA Awards David Hodge 01/16/12 HAMPTON, VA – Chowan University basketball players Kyree Bethel, Talaya Lynch, and Summer Curtis have each been honored by the CIAA for their performances last week. Bethel was tabbed Men's Rookie of the Week, while on the women's side, Lynch was named CIAA Player of the Week, and Curtis is the CIAA Rookie of the Week. Bethel led the Hawks in scoring in both games last week (vs. Winston-Salem State and Shaw). He averaged 24.5 points, 2.5 steals, and two assists for the week. Bethel shot 11-20 (55%) from three point territory, matching his season percentage. Currently, he is ranked #2 in the CIAA in three-point field goal percentage. Lynch had a great all-around week for the Hawks. In two games, she average 23.5 points and nine rebounds. Against Shaw on Saturday, January 14th, Lynch recorded her third double-double of the season, tallying 27 points and ten rebounds. For the week, she was 10-12 from the free throw line, and is leading the CIAA in free throw percentage. For the third time this season, Curtis was tabbed CIAA Rookie of the Week. The 6'3” freshman broke her own school record with nine blocked shots against Shaw on January 14th. She is averaging 3.2 blocks per game, which is the most among NCAA Division II freshmen. Curtis also averaged 10.5 rebounds per game this week. The Chowan men (7:30pm) and women (5:30pm) will host Saint Augustine's College tonight in the Helms Center. |
