WSSU Improves to 5-0 in CIAA Play

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Winston-Salem State University held off a late rally to capture a 60-56 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Lady Vikings began the game on a 7-0 run, holding the Lady Rams without a bucket from the floor over the contests’ first three minutes. WSSU battled back to take their first lead (22-20) of the game with 3:17 left in the first half and reeled off an 8-0 run to take a 28-20 advantage into the locker room.

ECSU was held scoreless from the final 8:47 of the first half.

The second half was just the opposite of the opening stanza; this time with the Lady Vikings playing from behind. WSSU held the game’s only double digit lead, 46-35 with 10:20 to go. ECSU went on a 17-7 run and capped by a jumper by Harper with 2:27 to go the Lady Vikings went ahead 54-53. Jasmine Newkirk answered with a layup at the 1:33 mark to put WSSU ahead for good. ECSU misfired on their next three shots at the basket while the Lady Rams (10-5, CIAA 5-0) sealed the win by going 5-6 from the free throw line in game’s final 1:15.

Wykeemia Gray and Harper, (who got her second double-double of the week with 11 boards) tied for team high honors with 13 apiece. Jasmine Walker chipped in with 11 points.

Newkirk and Schatavia Gray both finished with 11 points for WSSU.

ECSU (8-6, CIAA 2-2) will return to action when they host Shaw University on Monday, January 16 at the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
