MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS Sahar Abdur-Rashid 1/02/12 Hampton’s Jenkins, Phelps, UMES’ Barr and B-CU’s Frank Earn Weekly Honors NORFOLK, Va., January 2, 2012- Hampton guard Jericka Jenkins was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Porsha Barr earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman’s Demetria Frank and Hampton’s Ariel Phelps earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Jenkins (Guard, 5-4, Sr., Lancaster, Texas) averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 2.5 steals to aid the Lady Pirates to a 1-1 mark at the Tulane/Double Tree Classic. She scored 16 points, four rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a win over Central Michigan. She followed that performance with 28 points, three rebounds, and seven assists against Tulane. Jenkins earned All-Tournament team accolades while shooting 92-percent from the free-throw line (12-of-13). Barr (Forward, 5-10, Fr., Waldorf, Md.) was 3-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line to score eight points and grab three rebounds in nine minutes of play against Wake Forest. Frank (Guard, 5-9, r-Sr., Miami, Fla.) grabbed 14 rebounds, notched 14 steals and one block in two non-conference games last week. Frank contributed 30 points and 13 assists offensively for the Lady Wildcats. Phelps (Forward, 6-2, Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) pulled down 23 rebounds, recorded four blocks and two steals to aid the Lady Pirates last week. Against Central Michigan, Phelps tallied a career-high 13 rebounds, two steals and one block. In a loss to Tulane, the forward recorded 10 rebounds and three blocks. She added 19 points during the two games and was named to the Tulane/Double Tree Classic all-tournament team. Other Top Performers: JaQuayla Berry (NCAT) tallied double digit scoring with 16 points against Georgia Tech. Tiana Hemphill (SCSU) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds in a 68-67 loss to Jacksonville. Tamoria Holmes (Howard) averaged 18.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two Lady Bison wins last week. Tracy King (NCAT) recorded 23 points and five rebounds in a loss to Georgia Tech. Tiara Knotts (SCSU) scored 18 points and four rebounds in a one-point loss to Jacksonville. Chelsea Sanders (UMES) tallied 11 points and four rebounds in a loss to Wake Forest. Alexis Thornton (DSU) was 3-of-5 from the floor in a loss to Texas. Crystal Whittington (CSU) totaled 14 points and 15 rebounds in two victories for the Lady Eagles. |
