Hot Shooting Second Half Propels Vikings Past Patriots

ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Elizabeth City State University Vikings overcame a 38-36 halftime deficit to capture a 75-65 win over Francis Marion University Wednesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

In the first half the Patriots scored 10 points off second chance opportunities, out-rebounding the Vikings 24-12 with eight coming off the offensive glass. Francis Marion however could never build a lead, committing 15 first half turnovers which led to 16 points for ECSU. The lead changed hands 10 times, and the Patriots led by a basket at the intermission.

ECSU would seize the momentum and the game with a 20-6 run to start the second half. A Paul Goldsmith jumper at the 12:52 mark gave the Vikings their first double digit lead of the night 56-45. A layup by Zamarius McLendon briefly brought the score to nine, but ECSU responded with an 8-2 run and maintained a double digit advantage the rest of the way.

The Vikings shot 56% from the floor in the second half while holding the Patriots (5-3) to 30% over that same stretch. Francis Marion ended the game with a 41-35 rebounding advantage.

Paul Goldsmith and Quintin Spady both netted double figures in the win with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Evrik Gary scored a game high 20 points in the losing effort.

ECSU (6-2) will return to action December 16-17 at the USC-Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic in Aiken, SC. They will face the host team USC-Aiken on Friday at 7:30pm and will take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 1:00pm.
