Thorobrettes Suffer First Home Loss Danielle Wright 12/10/2011 FRANKFORT, Ky. (December 10, 2011) – The Kentucky State Thorobrettes returned home to the William Exum Center tonight for the first time since their season opener. Unfortunately, the Brettes were unable to pull out the win against the Missouri S&T Miners. The Thorobrettes got off to a slow start in the first half of play. Rebounds and free throw attempts were deciding factors in the first half as the Miners outrebounded the Brettes 24-14. The Thorobrettes were unable to get to the free throw line in the first half, while the Miners went 8-9 at the line. Kentucky State trailed Missouri S&T 12-34 at halftime. The Thorobrettes started the second half with a great hustle. Senior, Megan LaRue scored two quick points. With 14:33 left in the game, Tiffany Merrit shot the first free throws of the game for the Brettes, sinking both. With eight minutes left in the game, the Brettes’ defense hustled up and created back to back turnovers for the Miners. Senior, Raven Ward kicked up her momentum late in the second half. Ward led the offense with 13 points and 3 assists. Freshman, Brielle Newton, and junior, Tiffany Merritt, assisted her senior teammate in rallying points and rebounds. “Put-backs and layups were our scoring problems,” said Brettes Head Coach, Serena King-Coleman. “They started scoring and playing good defensive at the end.” Coleman was very optimistic about next semester stating, “Next semester will be better. They’re learning along the way.” With the loss, the Brettes fall 2-4 overall, while the Miners improve to 7-0. KSU travels to Jackson, TN on December 30, 2011 to take on Lane College. |
