Rain hinders day of competition

EUGENE, Ore. - Five runners from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore outdoor
track and field team finished their season Wednesday evening with the top competitors in
the country at the NCAA Division I Championships held at historic Hayward Field on the
campus of the University of Oregon.

Sophomore Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) finished the women's 800-meter run in
a time of 2:12.54. Her time was good for 22nd place overall in what proved to be a
difficult race due to rainy conditions.

The men's 4x100 relay team was disqualified during their event as a poor handoff on the
second leg resulted in a dropped baton. The quartet of junior Thomas Keane-Dawes
(Camden, N.C.), and sophomores Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.), Damian Miles
(Teaneck, N.J.) and Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) competed for the Hawks.

"We really worked hard to get here and compete at Nationals," said head coach Ernest
Barrett. "We had a rough day but it's one of those things that not everyone gets a chance
to compete in. It's a real accomplishment for the team to make it this far and I'm very
proud of them."

This was the first time the five UMES runners have competed at the NCAA
Championships.
