EIGHT HAWKS QUALIFY FOR NCAA EAST REGIONAL MAGGIE HAYON 05/24/10 Five men and three women will compete this weekend for UMES NEW ORLEANS, La. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the NCAA East Regional qualifiers this weekend and eight members of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team will compete May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. The Hawks are led by senior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.) who ranks 10th in the East Regional with his time of 46.00 in the 400-meter dash. He qualified with this time at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. Junior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) also qualified for the 400m with his time of 46.79 at the MEAC Championships. Sophomore Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) qualified in the 200-meter dash at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships with his time of 21.20. The trio also qualified for the 4x100 meter relay in addition to sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) with their time of 40.01 that was recorded at the MEAC Championships. Sophomore Johan Welter (Paris, France) was the final male to qualify with his time of 52.37 in the 400-meter hurdles that was set at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational. The women's squad had three members qualify for the regional in sophomores Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France), Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) and Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.). Anais and Jones both qualified with their 800-meter times at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships while Henry qualified in the shot put at the MEAC Championships. Anais finished with a season-best time of 2:05.84 while Jones registered a 2:07.13. Henry recorded a mark of 14.97 meters to qualify for the regional. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. |
