Woods’ nearly averages double-double for the season in 2009-10

DURHAM, NC – Winston-Salem State junior forward Vontisha Woods earned first team honors on the NCAA Division I All-Independent team which was announced Wednesday afternoon. Woods was a one of the top performers on the team this season, nearly averaging a double-double for the season and leading the team in both scoring (9.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). She was chosen as one of the top five players from the seven independent teams in the nation. The team was voted upon by both the independent head coaches and sports information directors.

The Danville, Va. native was one of two players to see time in all 30 games. She started in 29 games. For the season, she led the team with a career-high 294 total points and 241 rebounds. She also had a breakout defensive effort, tying her career-high with 17 blocks and adding 30 steals, the second most steals on the team for the season.

Her best game of the season came when she led the Lady Rams to an overtime win over Presbyterian College at the 2009 Morehead State Invitational when she scored 17 points with 12 rebounds. She also picked up a key steal and lay-up at the first half buzzer to keep the game tied. She pulled in 12 rebounds twice more during the season. Her best scoring effort came a little later when she scored 23 points against the Elon Phoenix. She also added three blocks at Norfolk State.

Joining Woods on the NCAA Division I All-Independent First Team were California State-Bakersfield senior guards Phynique Allen and Katie Williams. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s freshman center Raven Berry joined North Carolina Central freshman guard Joanna Miller to round out the All-Independent First Team.

The second team featured a pair of Longwood Lancers in sophomore forward and freshman guard Chelsea Coward as well as a pair of Seattle University Redhawks as senior forward Ashley Brown and Tatiana Heck were added to the team. Savannah State sophomore guard Crissa Jackson rounded out the second team.
