WSSU notches eight hits in tough loss

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-10) couldn’t hold off a late rally in a 7-5 loss to the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles (5-19), Tuesday afternoon. After jumping out to an early 5-3 lead, the Lady Rams allowed four unanswered runs to close out the tough loss. 

The Lady Rams had a solid offensive effort with eight hits, but could not keep up with a North Carolina Central team that racked up 13 hits. Junior catcher Kayla Woodbury had another great effort, going two-for-three from the plate with a run scored and two RBI. Junior Bonika Terry and freshman Britney Cato each added a pair of hits in the game. Terry went two-for-three from the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Both Woodbury and Terry highlighted the day with home runs as well. 

The Lady Rams struck early, scoring all five runs in the first two innings of the game. Terry got things going with an RBI single that scored freshman pitcher Brittany Lane. Woodbury followed the effort with a two-run home run that put the Lady Rams ahead 3-0 after the first inning. After allowing the Lady Eagles to tie the game with three second inning runs, the Lady Rams answered in the bottom of the second inning. It was Terry who answered the call for the Lady Rams with a two-run home run that put the team ahead 5-3 after the second inning. 

The scoring would end there for the Lady Rams as the team allowed three fourth-inning runs to the Lady Eagles the put WSSU into a 6-5 deficit. The team allowed one more NCCU run in the sixth inning to close out the game. In all, the Lady Rams allowed four unanswered runs in the loss. 

Freshman Brittany Lane (2-5) pitched her second game of the day, going all seven innings in the circle. She recorded five strikeouts with 13 hits and allowed seven earned runs in the loss. 

After four straight homes games, the Lady Rams will return to the road to take on the Savannah State Lady Tigers on April 1st.
