Cato records first career home run in tough loss

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-7) gave a solid effort, but the team could not match a hard-hitting Towson Tigers (11-3) team in a 9-1 six-inning loss. The Lady Rams struggled to keep up with the Tigers who knocked out 10 hits against the Lady Rams.

After totaling just four hits in two games yesterday, the Lady Rams matched that total with four hits against the Tigers. Four Lady Rams recorded one hit each in the game. Freshman infielder Brittany Cato led the WSSU effort with her first career home run.

The WSSU defense struggled to keep up with Towson as the team allowed six runs in the first two innings. The Lady Rams got off slowly, allowing five first inning runs to the Tigers. The Lady Rams were able to tighten up their defensive efforts as the team allowed just one run over the next three innings. Heading into the fourth inning, the Lady Rams trailed the Tigers 6-0 when Cato broke the scoring seal with a fourth-inning solo home run. However, the Lady Rams fell short, allowing three fifth-inning runs to the Tigers and ended the game.

The freshman tandem of Tiffany Burgess (1-3) and Brittany Lane handled pitching duties for the Lady Rams. Burgess pitched for two-thirds of the first inning, allowing five runs on five hits. Lane threw for three and two-thirds innings. She finished the game with eight strikeouts and allowing five hits.

The Lady Rams’ match-up against the Providence Friars was cancelled. With the cancellation, the Lady Rams finish the Adidas/Winthrop Invitational with a 0-3 record. The team will return to action Tuesday when the team takes on the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
