NCCU'S WHITE NAMED TO FCS ADA ACADEMIC ALL-STAR TEAM

Junior Defensive Lineman Tackles Ball-Carriers, Books and Community Service

CLEVELAND, Ohio – North Carolina Central University junior defensive lineman Teryl White has been announced as a member of the 12th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team.

White, a 6-5, 278-pound native of Winston-Salem, N.C., boasts an overall grade point average of 3.62 as a business management and administration major at NCCU.

The team’s starting defensive tackle, White finished his third season on the college gridiron with 59 tackles (24 solo), including team-high 11.0 tackles for a loss of 38 yards with 2.0 sacks for 13 yards lost, along with 2 pass break-ups and 4 quarterback hurries. He recorded a season-high 11 tackles, including 3.0 hits for a loss with 1.5 sacks versus Morehead State, tallied six stops at Duke, and collected six takedowns, including 1.5 hits for a loss at No. 9 Appalachian State.

Among his other academic accomplishments, White was voted to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team, garnering first-team recognition.

In 2008, he topped team with 11.0 tackles for a loss among 55 total tackles, all while earning a 3.80 GPA during the Fall 2008 semester while taking 15 credit hours.

White was selected as President of the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has performed an internship at an agency that helps Hispanics who have been victims of crimes, and works as a campus resident assistant.

"The FCS ADA looks forward to honoring outstanding student-athletes each year, which culminates with the annual academic all-star team announcement," said FCS ADA President Peter Fields, chair of the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee and athletics director at Montana State University. "These football players that represent the true meaning of the word student-athlete and we are proud of their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field."

Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.
